THE COUNTRY
Tucked between Guatemala and Nicaragua, Honduras is known for the amazing waters of the Bay Islands on the Caribbean Sea, a hot spot for divers and the ancient Mayan ceremonial site Copán.
Many travellers in Central America have the tendency to skip Honduras and El Salvador for a variety of reasons. San Pedro Sula in Honduras is a city with the highest crime rate in the world. It often gets blown up and people ask themselves if it really is worth visiting. The places with attractions are safe and if you stick to these locations you should be fine. I don't think Honduras or El Salvador is a country where you should go off the beaten path as this is the time where it may potentially be dangerous.
VISA/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Before going to Honduras ensure that your passport is valid for the next 6 months from the date of entry into the country. You need to have several blank pages available.
A tourist visa is available for up to 90 days at no cost. This applies to anyone to any British, EU, Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and USA passport holders.
If you hold a different passport from the countries mentioned, you need to check the requirements with the embassy. These additional requirements may vary from country to country.
CURRENCY
Lempira is the currency in Honduras. ATM's are mostly everywhere close to the tourist attractions. Debit and credit cards are accepted in most of the established vendors. Avoid carrying a lot of cash if possible. Carry enough to hold you up in the next 5-7 days then take more out when needed. If you're constantly going to be on the go in the next days. Budget and try to plan your daily spendings wisely.
TRANSPORTATION
Public bus/Shuttle - Your best choice to get around Honduras if you're on a budget. This is by far the cheapest option.
Shuttle service/Bus service/Boat service - This would be my preference of transportation when getting around Honduras. It might also be the safest way from getting to one city to the next. You can book your tickets through the hostel/hotel you're staying at or travel agencies in the city.
THINGS TO DO
Copán Ruinas (Copán) - Visit what was once of the greatest centre of the Mayan civilization over thousands of years ago.
Utila - Enjoy the laid back, slow, relaxing Caribbean life here. If not you could also get your PADI certification and do a couple of dives.
La Ceiba - You can walk around the city to explore or you could go to Pico Bonito National Park which is rich in wildlife.
Abandoned Drug Plane (Utila) - Go on an adventure and search for the abandoned drug airplane to see what's left of it.
Lake Yojoa - A tranquil place perfect for pampering yourself.
Despite the bad media surrounding the country, Honduras' inner beauty will only be discovered by those who are open minded. Maybe this is how it should be to maintain these unique sites from being over run by tourists.
