LAOS

THE COUNTRY

Situated between Thailand and Vietnam, Laos tends to be overlooked by the many travelling in the area. Compared to its neighbouring countries, you will find Laos more tamed and more laid back. The country offers beautiful landscape, the hustle and bustle of a city, and mini quiet getaways that you shouldn't miss. I spent 2.5 weeks in the country and what really stood out for me is the natural beauty of the country. If you're planning on skipping this country, maybe you should read up and decide at the end of this post.

VISA/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Ensure that your passport is valid for the next 6 months from the date of entry into Laos. Visa on arrival is available and fees vary depending on your country. They are typically between $30-$42 USD. If you're from Australia, it's $30 USD. If you're from Canada, it's $42 USD (I know!! The most expensive out of all the nations and I was really not happy about paying more than  everyone else when I was at the border.. but then again Canadians have a reputation of being "too nice" so we're not even going to argue this. Go ahead Laos, take our money!). If you're from China, it's $20 USD. If you're from India, it's $40 USD. If you're from Sweden, it's $31 USD. Lastly, if you're from USA, the UK, and any other countries, it's $35 USD.

There are also other countries that are ineligible to obtain visa on arrival, and they can only obtain a visa on arrival if they are traveling on an official visit and are holding an official letter of guarantee issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affair of Laos. Regardless most "western" countries are able to obtain a visa on arrival. A passport sized photo is required for the visa but if you don't have one handy, it'll set you back $2 USD. If you wish to extend your visa, it will cost you $2 USD per day and the maximum is capped at 90 days. If you overstay it will cost you $10 USD per day.

CURRENCY

Kip is the currency in Laos. ATM's are available everywhere.  Some vendors accept USD but be sure that the notes must be in good condition, no rips or tears. Debit/Credit cards are accepted in established vendors like hotels, hostels, restaurants etc.

Be prepared to carry loads of notes. As an example, $1 USD is equivalent roughly to about 8-9000 Kip. $200 USD is over 1.7 Million Kip. Yes, you can be a millionaire in Laos. A very important tip, do pay attention carefully as you can confuse a 1,000 note for a 10,000 note. You don't want to give out the wrong amount (too much) so double check every transaction to avoid this from happening.TRANSPORTATION

Tuk Tuk! - They are everywhere. Convenient for getting from one place to another in a city/town. Before you get in one, always bargain and agree on a price before getting in.

Scooter - You may rent a scooter and they are fairly cheap. Although I found myself being on a bicycle or walking around Laos more than being on a scooter.

Bicycle - Depending on how far your destination is or where you're trying to get to (within cycling distance), this is the best option and the cheapest way to get around the city/town.

Bus service/Shuttle service/Boat service - The most common way to get around from one city to the other is to go through a travel agency in the city/town you're in and buy a ticket. Travel agencies are everywhere selling tickets wherever your next destination is in Laos. It's safe, cheap, and easy!

THINGS TO DO

Slow Boat - If you can take the slow boat when crossing over to Laos, do it! The slow boat takes between 2-3 days offering scenic views during the ride.

Kuang Si Waterfall (Luang Prabang) - Probably one of the most iconic sites of the country. Google Laos and this will most likely be on top of yours search result.

Tubing (Vang Vieng) - This is on top of the list for party goers. Here you can enjoy cool drinks and tube down the Nam Song River from one bar to another. There's been a ton of incidents here involving intoxication and drowning that they've shut down the majority of the bars leaving a few left open. As with anything else, enjoy yourselves and be safe.

Hmong and Khmu Village (Luang Prabang) - This is a 2 day trek  up on the mountains. You will experience an authentic lifestyle of the people living in a remote village by doing a homestay overnight with a family. While trekking, you will also enjoy the beautiful landscape of the country.

Vang Vieng - Aside from partying and tubing down the Nam Song River, which is probably the number one thing travellers seek to do in Vang Vieng, rent a bike and explore the area! You will be stunned by its beautiful landscape.

Ventiane - Walk around and explore the monuments and temples in this busy city.

The Vang Vieng Challenge - For thrill seekers looking to be outside, I would highly recommend looking into this. Climbing, abseiling, zip-lining and more! A must for anyone wanting to do something active.

4000 islands - Rent a place by the water and have a relaxing day.

Khone and Phapheng Falls, Si Phan Don (4000 Islands) - You can walk here and go to the beach for a dip after.

Pak Ou Caves (Luang Prabang) - A well respected holy site in Laos, with history that goes back to thousands of years ago. Here you will find shrines and a lot of buddha statues inside. The landscape here is also stunning!

Alms Giving Ceremony (Luang Prabang) - Wake up bright and early to participate in this unique activity before sunrise. Monks walk around the streets of Luang Prabang to receive offerings from the locals and/or you (if you desire). Usually in a form of food. It's a unique experience to be a part of.

I hope I've convinced you enough to visit this country. Whether it'd be for a week or two or more, Laos is definitely something you can't miss out on! If you have any questions or feedback, do comment down below as I would love to hear from you! Happy adventuring everyone!
