THE COUNTRY
A country with a lot of history that preserved its medieval architecture, Poland is situated in Eastern Europe.
Aside from the history and it's beautiful buildings, Poland is also home to magnificent lakes and beautiful mountains. Close to the Slovakian border is Zakopane, this is the place for outdoor lovers and those wanting a break from the beautiful cities the country has to offer.
One cannot come to Poland without experiencing Auschwitz. A major part in our history that will always be remembered.
As hard as it is knowing what took place here, nothing can compare walking around in the camps themselves as it will give you a new perception in everything, at least that's what happened to me. I mean that in a good way.
VISA/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Ensure sure that your passport is valid for at least 3 months after your departure date from Poland.
Most passport holders are able to obtain a 90 day tourist visit at a no cost. EU nationals may stay without time limitations but must register with the local authorities after 3 months. If you're unsure about your country, do check online for more information.
CURRENCY
Zloty is the currency in Poland. ATM's are available everywhere. Debit and credit cards are also widely accepted everywhere.
TRANSPORTATION
Bus/Trams - Very common to get around in the city. They are inexpensive and simple to use.
Walk - If you're staying close to the centre (this is going to be most likely the case), the attractions shouldn't be too far and should be within walking distance.
FlixBus - To get from city to city, FlixBus and other similar buses like it can take you from one city to another as low as $10 USD.
Trains - Poland is not a big country, getting from one city to another doesn't take that long, at least not for me, maybe several hours tops. The trains are comfy, fast, and the most inexpensive way to get from one city to another depending on the distance.
THINGS TO DO
Join a Free Walking Tour - Most of the major cities in Poland offer an organized walking tour for free! A great activity for those on a budget wanting to know more about the city and the country.
Gdańsk - A gorgeous city on the Baltic coast, this is a colourful city with beautiful architecture. A vibrant part of the country that you cannot miss.
Wawel Castle (Krakow) - A picturesque castle that sits on a hill, a hot spot for many tourists.
Auschwitz (Oświęcim) - A very powerful site. Visiting this place made an impact of my perception about everything in life. This is an experience I will always remember and hold close to my heart.
Monument to the Anonymous Passerby (Wroclaw) - An interesting art work on the street that was unveiled on the anniversary of the imposition of martial law.
Zakopane - Located down south of the country near the Tatras Mountains. Scenic views of several lakes and mountain viewpoints can be found here.
Wieliczka - A town near Krakow known for its salt mines.
Wroclaw - Next to Gdansk, Wroclaw is another colourful city in Poland. Be sure to be on the lookout for gnombs on the streets.
The Jewish Quarter (Krakow) - A historic district of Krakow Old Town, now turned into a cool spot to have a bite and drink beverages.
Warsaw - The capital of Poland is a diverse city. From its historic buildings to modern skycrapers, the long history of this city remains everywhere.
Just like Hungary and Czech Republic, Poland is one of the major attractions in Eastern Europe. A budget friendly country with so much to offer from its long history, medieval structures, vibrant cities, and its beautiful landscape down south.
